- ABOUT
- The gin and tonic has a surprisingly practical origin story rooted in colonial medicine. The medicinal beginning In the early 19th century, British soldiers and officials in India were taking quinine to prevent and treat malaria. Quinine, derived from the bark of the South American cinchona tree, was dissolved in carbonated water to make it more palatable — this was the original "Indian tonic water." The problem was it tasted intensely bitter, so soldiers began mixing it with their gin ration, along with lime and sugar, to make it drinkable. The gin-and-tonic was born out of necessity.
